FFL Transfers – How to Transfer a Firearm

At Hilltop Sports & Hilltop Arms, we make it easy to receive firearms through a Federal Firearms License (FFL) transfer. Whether you're purchasing a firearm online or having one shipped from another dealer, our team is here to ensure a smooth, secure process.

What is an FFL Transfer?

An FFL transfer is the legal transfer of possession of a firearm from one Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) to another FFL or to a qualified individual. If a firearm is shipped across state lines, federal law requires it to be received and transferred through a licensed FFL dealer.

How to Complete an FFL Transfer to Hilltop Sports

Step 1: Purchase the Firearm

Buy your firearm from a seller (online dealer, auction site, or another FFL). During checkout, list Hilltop Sports & Hilltop Arms as your receiving FFL.

Step 2: Request Our FFL License

Email the seller's contact information and transfer request to: firearms@hilltopsports.com

We will send our FFL directly to the transferring dealer to authorize shipment.

Step 3: Notify Us of Your Transfer

To ensure proper processing, please provide:

  • Your full name and contact number

  • A brief description of the firearm being transferred

  • The name of the seller or sending FFL

This helps us match your order to you when it arrives.

Step 4: Wait for Confirmation

We will contact you once your firearm is received, logged, and ready for pickup. Please wait for confirmation before coming to the store.

Step 5: Complete the Transfer In-Store

To receive your firearm, you must:

  • Present a valid government-issued photo ID

  • Complete ATF Form 4473

  • Pass a NICS background check, unless exempt (e.g., valid Michigan CPL)

Once approved, the firearm will be released to you and recorded in accordance with ATF regulations.

NFA Transfers (Suppressors, SBRs, etc.)

We also accept and process NFA item transfers (such as suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and other Title II firearms). These transactions require:

  • A Form 4 application

  • A $200 tax stamp paid to the ATF

  • Background checks, fingerprints, and passport-style photos

  • ATF approval, which may take several months

We are a licensed Class 3 SOT dealer and will assist you every step of the way.

Transfer Fees & Storage Policy

  • FFL & NFA Transfer Fee: $45 per item

  • Firearms must be picked up within 14 days of arrival

  • Items not claimed within 30 days may be returned to sender or added to store inventory

  • Storage fees may apply for overdue pickups

Additional Information

  • We only accept transfers from licensed FFL dealers

  • All firearm transfers are final — once the firearm is transferred to you, it cannot be returned

  • If your background check is denied, you are still responsible for the $45 transfer fee and any return shipping or seller restocking fees
